Seeing this reminds me of my work colleagues and managers. Usually the like to stand to the side of the lectern unless they are being very very formal!
Lecterns are useful for cue cards but one should not hide behind them.

Point taken James, however you can use cue cards without using a lectern. The trick is, as you know, not to speak whilst looking down at the cards.
