Success with E-Commerce

London, UK

One of the best writers on the subject of E-Commerce is my colleague at Viewpoint Business, Graham Jones. I'm sure he would be impressed by this new e-commerce site. It's called Novelties4Parties. As you'll see, the site is well constructed and easy-to-use. It also scores well on these points:

  • Easy shopping cart
  • "Free shipping and "No hidden charges" are at the top
  • Lots of product available
In addition to the site itself, there's a blog.

Think Smart, Sell More

Earlier this month, I chaired a meeting where Geoff Burch (on the right) and Jonathan J. Gabay spoke on the subject "Think Smart, Sell More". Details of the event are here.

The future of the Internet

May become dominated by those who can afford to invest in more sophisticated content, as Graham Jones points out in his latest article.

Who knows what the future of the Internet will be. I suspect major brands and organizations will be dominate.

Online business - the future?

Graham Jones has outlined a vision of future internet use. Users will multi-task on-line, much as they do in real life and won't have time to search through all of your site. They'll have off-line media to read through as well.

Graham's message is quite clear - don't just rely on your internet presence to boost your business.

Graham Jones and those Internet Secrets

As Graham points out in his most recent post, there's rarely new things out there. Many internet marketing ideas are old ones repackaged.

Internet Marketers don't have secrets

So what do all these Internet Marketing Secrets really tell us? Well, other than a few technological methods, not a lot that business people didn't already know. All you have to do to succeed online is find your target audience, build a relationship with them, find out what they want and sell it to them at the highest price they are prepared to pay. That's it; it's worked offline for centuries and it now works online very well indeed.
How annoyed do you get seeing another web site offering you "Internet Marketing Secrets"? How upset do you get opening that email providing you with "Secrets of the Online Gurus"? And how frustrated are you when you read such "secrets" to find they are the same old stuff you already knew?

Code of Conduct for Bloggers

In today's Guardian, Tim O'Reilly, who apparently coined the term Web 2.0, calls for a Code of Conduct for Bloggers. The code would exhort bloggers not to say anything on-line that you wouldn't say on-line.

Personally, I share the view held by Seth Freedman from Israel. He says: "It's important to see the extreme reactions so people can gauge how certain topics bring out the worst in people."

Google Search

Ok, I have to admit I'm a bit of an Egogoogler. What's "egogoogling" I hear you exclaim? Well, according to Psychologies magazine (Feb 2007) it's the practice of typing one's own name into an Internet search engine to see what sites appear. It's also know as "autogoogling".

I suppose it's a bit of fun but it does lead to false impressions and erroneous conclusions. You see, you'll find after blogging or updating your web-site content that Google and others do move you up the rankings. Which of course is great news if you an ego-maniac but not if you're a budding corporate video producer wanting to make a name for yourself.

Rather than searching under "Trevor Watkins" for example, it's much better to search on "corporate video producer" and/or "video producer" and see the name Trevor Watkins appear.

This is where use of meta tags and the correct use of content labels becomes important. Regular and appropriate content will see you zoom up the ranks.

Usage and Abusage (2)

Just got this terrible story in from Lord Wells of Pfizer

Be aware of this. I had a lucky escape.

I walked into B&Q at lunchtime yesterday and some old guy dressed in orange asked me if I wanted decking.

Fortunately I got the first punch in and that was the end of that.

Those less suspecting might not be so lucky.

Sir Phillip Green

Was on Radio 4 this morning talking about his Retail Academy.

The main thrust this morning was his clear dislike of graduates who pitch up at Arcadia with "irrelevant" degrees wishing to have a career in retail. He said he'd rather take on a 17-year old with common sense and train them. A graduate at 22 or 23 years of age will still have to go through the same process. In fact they maybe a bit of a liability, all that student debt.

I think many of us share his view that university degrees for 50% of our youth is a flawed policy of this current Government. What Sir Phillip was saying, is that we need Technical Colleges churning out plumbers, electricians, engineers and so on.

Do you agree, or should we import labour from abroad to fill the skills gap?

Another way to boost your website/blog traffic

Sorry Technorati.

25 peeps, yes 25 peeps is a site where you can post your mugshot. Then the rest of the Blogosphere and web have the opportunity to vote for you to stay there. Get it?

My fingers are firmly crossed and I'm hoping for more traffic here and here.

So as they used to say in Northern Ireland, vote early and vote often.
