Margate v Tottenham Hotspur 13.1.1973

And on this day in 1973, we played Spurs in the 3rd round of the Cup. We should have scored after 10 minutes but went on to lose 6-0. It was the first time since 1936 that Margate FC had reached the 3rd Round. God knows when that will be repeated again.

The crowd that day was 14,169. Even if we had a decent ground nowadays, the Health & Safety Nazi's would stop us from having half that figure. For the Fulham game in 1997, "only" 5100 were allowed in.

Today, Margate FC is playing Worthing. The crowd is around 600.

For the football buffs amongst you, there's an excellent description of the Spurs match, with photographs, at Jeff Trice's excellent MFC history site.

Jeremy, why would you wish to remember an ignominious defeat?

I was also at Bournemouth 11 Margate 0 in 1971. Now that was a joke. Ted McDougalls 9 is still a record for the FA Cup proper. That got their revenge for the 3-0 drubbing of 10 years beforehand.

Ooh, I could go on and on..........

Jeremy I was there that day with Spurs. Strange day really. We arrived in Margate but it seems that most of the locals had decided to go somewhere else! Had fish and chips on the front and remember being quite worried that we might be knocked out. As you say the opening minutes were very tense but in the end it ended in a rout! Just looking back at that game to remember how old I was .....18!

Will be years before Margate has a chance of the 1st round let alone the 3rd.

On that day, if you remember, the term "Nice One Cyril" was coined.
